companies can save money using Mobile Surveyor is through reduction of survey errors. Mobile Surveyor has various methods of eliminating survey errors completely. All companies vary, but we have found that on average survey errors cost £10,000 per surveyor, per year in either waste product manufactured (if you are a fabricator) or ordered (if you buy in your windows). Ie a team of 5 surveyors would typically cost an extra £50,000 per year in waste due to survey errors, all of which comes straight off the bottom-line.

What other ways can Mobile Surveyor save money?

There are significant other cost savings that customers make using Mobile Surveyor. These include:

More efficient surveying you can do more surveys with the same number of surveyors

Reduction in travel time because Mobile Surveyor picks up survey jobs and send back survey data whilst working remotely, there is no need to visit the office to pick up jobs or drop off paperwork

Fewer surveys need be carried out due to complete elimination of re-surveys

More accurate surveys through standardised methods and very accurate lazer measurement equipment. Mobile Surveyor makes sure that all surveys are of the highest possible quality

Template surveys standard job details can be pre-configured for survey jobs meaning that surveyors do not need to spend time filling in repeat details e.g. if a large council project all has standard frame and fixture details, then these are all pre-completed for the surveyor. E.g. if a survey is a door-only then none of the window details need be completed only those parts of the survey relevant to doors.

Elimination of pricing and windows design software Mobile Surveyor contains modules to design windows and doors including standard pricing. There is no need to have other software to do these tasks

Elimination of data re-keying Mobile Surveyor can link into other IT systems so that data can be shared without re-keying. E.g. with CRM and customer systems.

How easy is Mobile Surveyor to use?

Our customers find it very easy if you are an experienced surveyor then you ll quickly find it just as easy to use as paper/pencil/tape-measure methods. Plus Mobile Surveyor prompts for all required information so there no need to remember to complete all the details Mobile Surveyor will remind you if anything s been forgotten.

Does it make surveying easier?

Yes Mobile Surveyor guides users to use standard measurement methods so that surveyors can concentrate on taking accurate measurements, rather than complex calculations to ensure all the measurements are accurate. Also there are some advanced features that will allow (for example) surveyors to measure 1st-floor windows without climbing a ladder !, just by automatically calculating the angles.

What happens if the user goes out of range off a mobile signal?

Firstly let s remember that more than 97% of the UK now has coverage, so loss of signal is quite rare nowadays. However Mobile Surveyor does need to handle this eventuality, which it does as follows:

If a new message needs to be sent to a user whilst they are mobile (e.g. a new survey job, a software update, a new window style, etc) then this will be downloaded as soon as the user falls within a reception area the update is handled automatically by Mobile Surveyor.

If there is no signal as the user wishes to send data back to the office (or the signal is lost part-way through sending), then mobile surveyor saves the data locally and automatically resends when the user moves back into a signal area. The data is not lost and the user carries on their work without being aware of the signal loss. Mobile Surveyor alerts uses on successful completion of data sending.

What about data volumes and tariffs doesn t it all get rather expensive?

Mobile Surveyor contains unique data compression software so that all data that is sent via the networs is minimised in size to control running costs. Also Mobile Surveyor is configured to be aware of tariffs and adjust its actions accordingly. E.g. A survey may contain measurement data and pictures/voice notes too. Measurement data is typically low in size, whereas pictures are large On installation our engineers will configure Mobile Surveyor to be fit with a customer s needs regarding data transfer a common approach is to send measurement data back to the office whatever the signal, but to hold onto the pictures until a cheaper network, such as Wi-Fi or a docked connection is detected, and to send large data items back at this time.

What about Security what happens if I lose my PDA

Mobile Surveyor integrates into your existing network security system so that it inherits the same username/password security you use for your office systems. Without entering the correct username and password no-one can get access to the system. Additionally any data that is stored locally on the PDA device is fully encrypted using 128-bit encryption methods to ensure that it s impossible to read using another program without knowing the encryption key.

What happens if MY PDA batteries fail do I lose my data and application

Nearly all modern Windows Mobile devices have a backup battery which is designed to stop information being lost in the event of the main battery fail or even being suddenly removed. The backup battery typically lasts for several weeks. In the worst case and the PDA is reset to factory defaults, the application can be reinstalled and the data resynchronised. Only surveys which were not returned to the factory would be lost.

How do I add new window style and other master data?

Mobile Surveyor comes complete with an administration module, held centrally, that allows customers to maintain their system, including new suppliers, new window style, features etc.

Does Mobile Surveyor produce any reports?

The Administration module contains a report function that allows customers to build reports according to their requirements typically these can include survey statistics for management use, Fitter s reports, health and safety reports and even formatted order forms for bought-in windows.

How do I manage the Administration module Backups, removal of old data etc?

MattAll data is held in Microsoft SQL Server databases (one for the user credentials and a separate one for survey and master data). These databases can be backed up using either the built-in SQL Server backup tools or a 3rd party backup utility.

Surveys which are no longer required are marked as Archived. These surveys can be purged from the database at regular intervals (e.g. purge all archived surveys over 3 years old). Reference and master data is always retained on the system (even if it is marked as inactive) to ensure the historical integrity of the database.

I don t have an IT department so I don t want to have any computers to maintain?

Mobile surveyor can optionally be offered as a hosted service, where we look after your systems on our own servers users just use the system as normal, but there s no server in your office it s in ours.

Do I have to buy the software, can I rent it?

It is possible to rent the software rather than buy it. It s cheaper in the short term to do this, and gives more flexibility to customers, but there are some limitations too talk to us about what s best for your requirements.

We already use PDAs in our business can Mobile Surveyor run on those?

Mobile Surveyor runs on Windows Mobile PDAs, version 5.0 or later. It needs bluetooth and a built-in phone. There are dozens and dozens of available devices some of them work better than others. Ask us for advice on this.

What about printed output?

The administration module produces all sorts of reports for users back in the office. From Version 2, it will be possible for Mobile Surveyor users to be able to produce window design prints whilst working remotely from special blue-tooth printers. This means that a surveyor can leave signed copies of the window designs with a customer without having to travel back to the office to complete the administration.

Can a survey contain items from more than one supplier?

Yes. Mobile Surveyor can contain unlimited suppliers, each with their own product range.
